ISLE OF WIGHT COAST PATH

RYDE - SANDOWN  12 miles

HOME       SANDOWN TO CHALE

From the Catamaran it is a short walk down the pier into Ryde. Hey yes you can catch the island's train service to the end of the pier - but we are walking from now on don't forget. It is easy going to Seaview; a small seaside village that sets the tone for the walk. From here some inland walking, just in case your tired of the coast already. Bembridge looks so close, but a frustrating walk around the estuary ensues. The house boats offer some interest and relief from the din of the traffic along the road. Detour into Bembridge or press on around the coast, passing the lifeboat station and start the climb up onto the cliffs. Culver Down is a highlight of the walk, with fine views in all directions. From here it is a steady walk down towards Sandown. Once off the cliffs I walked along the beach, climbing over the groynes and thinking about the time years ago when I had spent a school holiday at Sandown. Its pleasant beach had provide a welcome retreat school trips to Castles or those obligatory long walks which seemed so dull!
