ISLE OF WIGHT COAST PATH

COWES TO RYDE  8 miles

HOME     TOTLAND TO COWES

I loved Cowes. A meal and beers in a local pub. The walls adorned with pictures of every type of boat. Stories of yachters coming from all over the world for Cowes week. They sail the Solent and revel in the atmosphere of the sea, and bustling ports and other things they know of. It's an easy day today. Why have I made it so easy for you ? Well its going home time. All good things must come to an end. But hang on their is one thing left for you my lad. Osborne House. Go there it really is a fitting finale to the walk. Queen Victoria’s favourite retreat. And now I know why. Well I love this little Island and so did she. Her house is full of treasures of a great age in English history. I spent several hours and even had a ride, through the grounds, on the horse drawn carriage to the museum - full of little treasures that the children of the Royal family had collected. Then its back to the trudge, more drudgery, the best bits over until finally back to Ryde and the sea. It’s a strange thing walking around an Island. Setting off in one direction, never retracing your footsteps, always feeling you are walking onwards; forever onwards. Then suddenly after five days arriving back where you started. No sad moments, no final tears and farewells, only the resolution to return and do the whole thing again as soon as possible! OK you can catch the train this time and save the walk up the pier for another day.
